The Eternal God

“For thus says the High and Lofty One Who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: I dwell in the high and holy place, with him who has a contrite and humble spirit…” (Isaiah 57:15).,

One of the names of God revealed in the Bible is El Olam (Genesis 21:33).  It is not a common name, but it does have great significance.  It essentially means “God the Everlasting One.”  It refers to the eternal nature of God, who exists beyond the constraints of time.  The Hebrew word olam literally refers to something concealed, hidden, or vanishing.  It is a picture of eternal duration.  You look back into the past until history vanishes, and God is there.  You look into the future until existence is hidden from view, and God is there.  The Psalmist speaks of this everlasting nature of God in Psalm 90:2.  You could render this verse, “from vanishing point to vanishing power, you are God.”  There is no end to the scope of God’s being.

After Death… Then What?

At Advancing Native Missions we are now in a period of mourning.  We have just recently lost one of the oldest members of our staff.  The Reverend Gordon Shira was a part of ANM from the very beginning.  Following a successful and varied ministerial career, he had spent the past 25 years doing volunteer work in our offices.  He served as the mission chaplain for decades.  He also did clerical work in our receipting department since the earliest days of this ministry.  He was a generous, kind-hearted and deeply devout man of God.  We will miss him greatly.

Being conscious of Gordon’s passing has made me aware of the issue of death, of the mortality that we all face.  And it prompts me to write about death itself, and what happens when we die.  May I tell you that this is an area where there is an abundance of myth and misunderstanding.  Even in the church I often hear Christians make assertions about those who have died that are simply not true.  We do not know everything about what happens when we die.  But we do know quite a bit.  The Scriptures are very clear on a number of things. A Lament for Joy Garden

I grew up in Richmond, Virginia.  Until my wife and I moved to Charlottesville, VA in 1987 it was always home to me.  For the first seven years of our marriage, Sue and I lived in various places in the Northside or West End of town.  Early on we discovered a Chinese restaurant that would remain one of our favorites even after leaving the city—Joy Garden.  Joy Garden was located on Broad Street, near the corner of Broad and Boulevard.  It was a family-run restaurant with delicious food, friendly service and a fun atmosphere.  Their Beef Sichuan is still the standard for that dish by which Sue measures all other restaurants.  Even though we moved to Charlottesville, then Pennsylvania, and now Crozet, VA we would still dine at Joy Garden when we had the chance. Home At Last

“But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ” (Phil. 3:20 NIV)

There’s an old saying:  There’s no place like home.  That phrase has been sung about, poems have been written about it, many a sampler hangs on the walls of people’s houses with that saying on it… in fact, it has been used so much it has become a cliché.  But for all that, it still rings so true… There’s no place like home! Do We Have An Immortal Soul?

Question:  Is the soul of man immortal, or does it ceases to exist at death?  D. in Crozet, VA.

Answer:  The word immortal basically means not liable to death, undying or deathless.  There is a debate both within the church and without about whether the soul is immortal.  To truly understand this issue, we need to first understand what we mean by death. Continue reading
