Witnessing to the Witnesses

What do you do when a Jehovah’s Witness shows up on your doorstep?  Do you turn the TV off, close the curtains and pretend that you are not home?  Instead of going into a “raise the drawbridge” mode, how about sharing your faith with the Witness knocking on your front door?  Here are some tips on how to do this effectively.

  1. Focus on essential doctrines: The Trinity, the nature of Christ (especially His deity), the bodily resurrection, and salvation by grace.

The Founder’s Key

It is not often that I am draw to the field of political science.  For me, that is basically like eating liver—it might be good for you, but it is not very palatable.  So it was with a great deal of surprise that I discovered (and thoroughly enjoyed) The Founder’s Key by Larry P. Arnn.  Arnn, president of Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, Michigan, is a professor of politics and history.  As P. J. O’Rourke says in his endorsement of this book:  “The Founder’s Key is not just brilliant but—in a shock to political science—a pleasure to read.”  And indeed, it is a pleasure to read this very important book.

Did I say important?  Well, I meant it.  This is one of those books that you really wish everyone would read.  In a culture that has both forsaken and forgotten the very principles and ideals that our nation was built upon, this book offers insight into how it might just be possible to find our back—at least in the governmental and political sphere.  The basic thesis of the book is this: Our rights and freedoms are codified in the both the Declaration and the Constitution together. No “Trinity” in the Bible?

Question:  If God is really a Trinity, then why is the word “trinity” not found in the Bible?

Answer:  A common argument against the doctrine of the Trinity is that the very word “trinity” is not found in the Bible.  This is often used by Jehovah’s Witnesses.  Yet they are not alone.  You hear this line of reasoning quite often from various sources.

Now we admit that the word “trinity” is not found in the Bible.  It is a post-biblical word coined by Christian writers.  However, the concept of the Trinity is definitely found in Scripture.  In fact, a careful study of both Old and New Testaments reveals a wealth of Bible passages that present the Trinity to us.  It is a solidly biblical concept.

Using a term such as “Trinity” for describing the Godhead came about because as the early followers of Christ examined the Scriptures, they were confronted with the reality that God is both One and Three.  For centuries they struggled with how to understand this truth.  In their attempts to discuss and explain the nature of the Deity, they developed a vocabulary that while not found in the Bible is still firmly rooted in the Sacred Writings. Where Did God Come From?

An Important Question

Our questions like “Who is God?,” “Does He exist?,” “What is He like?,” and “Where did He come from?” are important. For knowing about God, and who He is of primary importance.

Why is it important what we believe about God? First, it is important because our salvation depends on it! Jesus said that to know the true God means eternal life (John 17:3). Note, Jesus says here, “This is eternal life.” He defines eternal life as knowing the one true God. Second, it is important because if we are to live right we have to know God! Judges 2:10 – 12 tells that because the people did not know God that they stopped following Him and served other gods. In Jeremiah 22:16 we see that to know God means that we will act in a manner that is consistent with his nature.   Continue reading

Members Church of God International

The official name of this group is the Members Church of God International.  It is also often referred to as Ang Dating Daan (ADD), which translates as “The Old Path,” the name of its international TV broadcast.  Members are sometimes called ADD after the broadcast name.

The MCGI developed out of an indigenous Filipino cult known as the Iglesia ng Dios kay Kristo Hesus, Haligi at Suhay ng Katotohanan (Church of God in Christ Jesus, Pillar and Support of the Truth) which was started in 1928 by Nicolas Antiporda Perez.  Perez’s church was, in turn, an offshoot of Felix Manalo’s Iglesia Ni Cristo.  Perez led his church as the first Presiding Minister until his death in 1975.  Eliseo Soriano, an ordained minister in the Perez’s church, left the group in 1976 to start his own organization—which he asserted was the true church of God.  Soriano reformed the church in 1980 as the Mga Kaanib Iglesia ng Dios kay Kristo Hesus Haligi at Saligan ng Katotohanan sa Bansang Pilipinas (Members Church of God in Christ Jesus the Pillar and Ground of the Truth in the Philippines).  Under Perez the church had consisted of a single local congregation of about 100 members.  Under the leadership of Soriano, this new church has grown into an international organization.  The church has over 5000 local congregations in the Philippines, and can be found in about 100 other countries.  Some estimate that there may be as many as one million members worldwide.  The name of the group was officially changed to the Members Church of God International (MCGI) in 2004.
