An Eagle Scout’s Stand for Righteousness

I wish you could have been there. It was a memorable event. Indeed, an unforgettable event. It was the Court of Honor for a young man who had achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. I will refrain from using his name. He is rather modest, and I don’t want to cause him any embarrassment. However, at the same time I wish I could broadcast his name across the country. A young Christian man with such courageous virtue deserves to be honored, to be recognized.

The Court of Honor was impressive. It stirred my heart to see the ceremonious actions, the words of commendation, the rehearsal of the values and journeys of a scout. Finally, our young hero stepped forward to receive his due recognition and honor. The capstone of the occasion was his Eagle Scout speech. Wow! It was truly inspiring to witness this 16 year old young man of God declare his appreciation for scouting, his love for God, and his moral convictions. And to maturely, courageously announce due to those very same moral convictions that that day would be his last day of involvement in the Boy Scouts of America. In response to the recent decision of the BSA to admit homosexuals to their ranks, this new Eagle Scout boldly took a moral stand based on his principles and values, and thus was leaving the Scouts. “That’s Not Nice.” Good!

With the advent of an amoral, ethically apathetic, and increasingly characterless society—which we are now experiencing—we have correspondingly seen an epidemic spread through our land. There is moral disease that is robbing us of convictions, values, and truthfulness. It is draining off our integrity, killing our sense of righteousness, and undermining the proclamation of truth. It is a sickness that rots the very fiber of our being as a nation, as a people. It is nothing less than a plague of NICENESS. Continue reading

In Defense of Dragons

I believe in dragons. No, I do not believe in unicorns, griffins, manitcores, or hippogriffs. I do not believe in sylphs, salamanders, gnomes or undines. I do not believe in fairies or elves (sorry Tolkien). I do not believe in the Minotaur, centaurs or satyrs. I certainly do not believe in the bogeyman, will-o-the-wisps, ghosts, or poltergeists. But, and I say this emphatically, I do truly and with certainty believe in dragons. I believe that they actually once existed on earth, and they may possibly still exist in remote and exotic places today. Continue reading

Mother Earth Is Only A Child

I am foolish. I admit it. I have no qualms about saying it, confessing it. You see, I am foolish enough to believe that there are moral absolutes. I am foolish enough to believe that there is a God that rules in heaven and on earth. I am foolish enough to believe that the marriage covenant is sacred and should be inviolate. And, yes, I am foolish enough to believe that the Bible is trustworthy and accurate… even when it comes to such matters as the age of the earth itself. Continue reading

Hating sin… but loving gays

This Trogo is one that has been brewing in my mind for quite some time… months I guess. It is the result of comments that I have been hearing from Christians over and over. It concerns the church’s current attitude toward the sin of homosexuality. Here is a sampling of the flood of dialogue that goes on about this issue.

Regarding a family or friend who has come out of the closet: “So what’s the big deal? I know that homosexuality is a sin. But it is no different from any other sin.”

Regarding the Boy Scouts decision to openly allow homosexual boys to join the Scouts: “What does it matter? They are boys just like the others. And who knows… maybe some Christian can reach them with the Gospel.” Continue reading
