Here is Your God!

In Exodus 32 we see a very sad story. In the many, many sad stories of the idolatrous and wayward history of the people of Israel this is surely one of the most tragic. Here we see Israel just six weeks after the awesome display of God’s power in delivering them from Egypt. With that dramatic memory still burning within them, they begin to question Moses and God. In Exodus 32:1 they express wonder that Moses, who is on Mt. Sinai receiving the tables of the Law, has been gone so long. They also have seen God just recently manifest His glory and presence in the fire, smoke, thunder and quaking of the mountain. Yet, despite all this they are questioning not just Moses, but God Himself. And so they demand of Aaron, “make us a god who will go before us!”

So what did poor, foolish Aaron do? He bowed to the will of crowd. He made them an idol, a golden calf. And when they saw it, they declared “This is your god, O Israel, who brought you up from the land of Egypt.” Wait a minute… THIS is your god? Yes. They said that this golden calf, this idol made by men’s hands, is nothing less than Jehovah God Himself. They declared that this image was the Lord God, their Deliverer and Savior. Continue reading

Did You Ever Wonder?

Some call them imponderables. They are those silly semantic quirks and inane realities of everyday life that we all hear, and are emailed by the dozens. They are oxymorons, paradoxes, and nonsensical things like…

* Why is there handicapped parking in front of skating rinks?
* Why is it that we park in driveways and drive on parkways?
* How can you have a jumbo shrimp?
* Why do banks leave their vault doors open, but chain their pens to the counter?
* Why is “abbreviated” such a long word?
* Why isn’t there mouse-flavored cat food? Continue reading

Authentic Christians

Recently I was preparing for a seminar. As I was researching various sources I came across an article by a well-known pastor in this country. The article was excellent. Very helpful… even though it came from a writer that I don’t always appreciate. I rarely read his material—well, for various reasons. One reason is his behavior. He is one of the current breed of preachers who think it’s okay to be crude, to use profanity, and say inappropriate comments, even in the pulpit—all with the rationale of being “authentic.” Continue reading

Black Mass at Harvard

There is going to be a Black Mass at Harvard University on Monday night, May 12. Yes, you heard me correctly. A Black Mass. At Harvard. Here in the good ol’ USA. The Harvard Extension Cultural Studies Club has organized a Black Mass reenactment at the Queen’s Head Pub, which is on the university campus. This is being done for “educational purposes.” And how does Harvard University itself respond to this upcoming event? Harvard says it “supports the rights of students and faculty.” Humph! What Evil Lurks in the Hearts of Men

I am thinking this afternoon about the nature of evil. Possibly a rather strange subject to be contemplating on a Friday afternoon. Maybe it’s all the bizarre crimes that we hear about these days. Or maybe it’s the violence raging its way through the Middle East right now. Or perhaps it’s simply the clouds and gloom that I see outside my office window. Whatever the reason, the matter of evil keeps coming to mind. Continue reading
