“For we cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth” (2 Corinthians 13:8).
A. W. Tozer was an amazing man of God. I love to read his books, but I can count on coming away with sore toes. He inspires, challenges, rebukes, convicts and encourages. His works are not light reading, or for anyone who likes a candy-coated, fluffy message. Consider this quote from Tozer:
“Little by little, Christians these days are being brainwashed. One evidence is that increasing numbers of them are becoming ashamed to be found unequivocally on the side of truth. They say they believe, but their beliefs have been so diluted as to be impossible of clear definition. Moral power has always accompanied definite beliefs. Great saints have always been dogmatic. We need a return to a gentle dogmatism that smiles while it stands stubborn and firm on the Word of God that lives and abides forever.”
Something to think about, huh? Now consider that this was written about 50-60 years ago! What would Tozer say today? He probably would have a hard time believing what is promoted in the religious world as truth. And this is a shame. We have lost our way in many respects. Consequently, we have lost much of the beauty, certainty, and power of our faith. You see, it is in believing in absolute truth and accepting God’s revealed truth that we discover so much of the power and provision of God. Consider what truth does for us.
- Truth leads us to God (Psalm 43:3).
- Truth gives us hope (Psalm 119:43).
- The Lord promises to be near to those who call on him in truth (Psalm 145:18)
- Truth brings us to the light (John 3:21).
- The Father seeks those who will worship in truth (John 4:24).
- The truth sets us free (John 8:32).
- The truth sanctifies us (John 17:17, 19).
- Truth enables us to hear the voice of Jesus (John 18:37).
- Love rejoices in truth (1 Corinthians 13:6).
- By speaking truth, we verify what kind of people we are (2 Corinthians 4:2).
- Speaking the truth in love enables us to grow in Christ (Ephesians 4:15).
- Truth brings unity (Ephesians 4:25).
- Truth equips us for spiritual warfare (Ephesians 6:14).
- Loving the truth brings salvation (2 Thessalonians 2:10).
- Truth is a resource for the Christian worker (2 Timothy 2:15)
- The new birth comes through truth (James 1:18)
- Obedience to truth produces Christian love (1 Peter 1:22).
- Truth gives us assurance in Christ (1 John 3:19).
- Truth is discerning (1 John 4:6).
- Truth helps to walk faithfully (3 John 1:3).
Do you get the idea that truth is important? Indeed, these references only scratch the surface. Truth is mentioned over 200 times in the Bible, and this doesn’t include synonyms or similar words.
Child of God, what do you need from the Lord today? The answer is found in the Word of God, the source of truth. His truth will truly set you free. Count on it.
